NGC 5194, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a classic spiral galaxy, only 23 million light years distant, and 65,000 light-years across. Also know as M51, it is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies in the sky.

The Whirlpool is visible with binoculars in the constellation of Canes Venaciti.
