Messier 82 is an example of a starburst galaxy. Located in Ursa Major, it is roughly 12 million light years from Earth, and is roughly five times brighter than the entire Milky Way.

Nicknamed the Cigar Galaxy, Messier 82 is listed in the New General Catalogue as NGC 3034.

This galaxy is also home to the brightest pulsar yet detected.
