SpaceIL is an Isreali non-profit company competing in the international Google Lunar X Prize. Until now, only three countries have landed rovers on the Moon: the Soviet Union, the United States, and China. The aim of the Google Lunar X Prize is to encourage commercial, private sector organizations to return to the Moon by December 31st, 2017. To be successful, the winning team must safely land a rover on the Moon, have it travel 500 meters on, above, or below the surface; and transmit high-definition video and images back to Earth. So far, SpaceIL is the only team to have reached the stage of securing a verified launch contract for its spacecraft: Spaceflight Industries will be responsible for sending the Israeli rover into space using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
